Verified Rotunda of Mosta (Mosta Dome)

Mosta, Central Region, Malta

The Rotunda of Mosta, also known as the Mosta Dome, is one of Malta’s most famous churches and a major landmark in the town of Mosta.

Built between 1833 and the 1860s in a neoclassical style and inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, it is renowned for its enormous unsupported dome, which is among the largest of its kind in the world. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and features a magnificent interior decorated with artwork, sculptures, and ornate architectural details.

It is best known for the “Miracle of Mosta” during World War II, when a bomb pierced the dome during a church service in 1942 but failed to explode, leaving the hundreds of people inside unharmed. Today, the Mosta Dome is both an active place of worship and one of Malta’s most visited attractions. Its impressive architecture, fascinating history, and panoramic dome make it a symbol of faith, resilience, and Maltese heritage.
