Verified 's Gravenkasteel

Grimbergen, Belgium, Belgium

's Gravenkasteel (also called Gravenkasteel or Lundenkasteel) is a historic water castle in the village of Humbeek, part of the municipality of Grimbergen in Flemish Brabant, Belgium, situated on an island surrounded by a moat in the middle of the forested domain known as the Prinsenbos or 's Gravenbos, and originally belonging to the lords of Humbeek.

The castle was built in the 13th century as a medieval stronghold and served for several centuries as the residence of the lords of Grimbergen, later evolving from a noble house into a convent and reflecting the social and religious changes in Belgium from the 16th to the 20th century, before it was set on fire and largely destroyed by German troops in 1944, leaving only the main gate tower, a corner tower and parts of the defensive walls in a ruined state.

The site includes brick and sandstone structures, former stables and a horse yard in a neotraditional style, and the whole castle building, the former horse breeding establishment and the surrounding park are now officially protected as a monument; the ruins themselves are not open to the public, but they can be viewed from the walking paths of the Prinsenbos, and future plans exist to transform the structure into an exhibition space on 16th‑century construction techniques, making it a protected, atmospheric heritage landmark that is visible from the forest rather than a fully accessible tourist castle.
