Saint-Julien-d'Arpaon is a small rural community in the Lozère department of southern France, within the Cévennes region. Since 2016, it has been part of the larger commune of Cans-et-Cévennes. The area has fewer than 100 residents and is surrounded by mountainous landscapes, forests, and the Mimente River. The village lies in the heart of the Cévennes National Park and is known for its peaceful natural setting. It is located along the famous Robert Louis Stevenson Trail (GR 70), a long-distance hiking route inspired by the journey described in Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes. One of its most notable landmarks is the ruin of a historic château overlooking the village, which was mentioned by Stevenson during his travels. The combination of historic remains, scenic valleys, and traditional Cévennes character makes the area especially attractive to walkers and nature lovers. Today, Saint-Julien-d'Arpaon is valued for its tranquil atmosphere, beautiful mountain scenery, and its role as a stop along one of France’s most celebrated hiking routes.
