San Javier
Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia
San Javier, also known as Comuna 13, is one of Medellín’s 16 communes, located in the city’s west-central area in Antioquia, Colombia, and home to approximately 134,000–160,000 residents living in densely packed hillside neighborhoods. Originally a quiet farming settlement called “La Granja” in 1869, it became a low-income urban area in the mid-20th century and gained notoriety in the 1990s as one of Colombia’s most violent neighborhoods due to drug trafficking and gang conflicts. However, through major public investment and community-led transformation, Comuna 13 has reinvented itself as a vibrant cultural and tourist destination, most famously for its outdoor graffiti tours, colorful street art, and the world’s longest outdoor public electric escalators installed in 2012 to help residents climb the steep hillsides. The area now features lively street music performances, hip-hop and breakdancing shows, local food stalls, and rooftop viewpoints, drawing visitors eager to witness Medellín’s remarkable story of urban renewal and social resilience. Its main access is the San Javier Metro station connected to Metrocable Line J, making it easily reachable from downtown Medellín’s core.
