Sancerre
France, France
Sancerre is a historic hilltop town in the Cher department of central France, overlooking the Loire River.
It was originally settled by the Celtic Bituriges tribe before becoming part of Roman Aquitania, with archaeological evidence suggesting a Roman temple dedicated to Julius Caesar in the area. The town became a feudal possession of the counts of Champagne in the 12th century, who built a château and protective ramparts.
Sancerre famously resisted English forces twice during the Hundred Years' War and later became a Protestant stronghold during the French Wars of Religion, enduring an eight-month siege in 1573. The town is renowned today for its wine production, especially its Sauvignon Blanc, grown on the steep slopes below it.
Wine cultivation in Sancerre dates back to Roman times and was heavily influenced by Celtic and later medieval practices. The local vineyards were devastated by 19th-century diseases but were replanted primarily with Sauvignon Blanc, giving rise to the white wines for which Sancerre is now famous worldwide.
The area also contains medieval architecture such as the 15th-century Tour des Fiefs, the remains of an ancient castle keep, and a picturesque network of old streets.
