Verified Sarzay

France, France

Sarzay is a small village in the Indre department of the Centre-Val de Loire region, best known for its remarkably well-preserved medieval fortress, the Château de Sarzay.

Surrounded by the gentle countryside of the historic Berry region, the village offers a peaceful rural setting rich in heritage and history. The Château de Sarzay dates largely from the 14th and 15th centuries and was built by the Barbançois family. With its imposing towers, moats, and defensive features, it is considered one of the most authentic medieval castles in central France and has been protected as a historic monument since 1912.

Sarzay also has a literary connection to the famous French writer George Sand, who used the castle as inspiration for her novel Le Meunier d’Angibault. Today, visitors come to explore the castle, enjoy the rural landscapes, and experience a glimpse of medieval France.
