Schloss Bracht
Burg-Reuland, Belgium, Belgium
Schloss Bracht (or Château de Bracht) is a relatively small, elegant manor‑castle situated in the village of Bracht, part of the municipality of Burg‑Reuland in the German‑speaking community of Belgium, in the province of Liège.
It was built between 1782 and 1785 on the orders of Georg Friedrich August Ferrand von Montigny, the last lord of the medieval Reuland castle, who moved his residence here as fortress life became outdated; the building was erected on older foundations but designed as a comfortable, somewhat luxurious country house rather than a fortified stronghold.
The estate consists of a regular three‑winged complex made up of agricultural buildings and a central manor house; the main façade to the garden side is marked by a triangular gable with a red sandstone coat of arms of the von Montigny family, and chronograms over the north and south gates give the construction dates 1782 and 1785.
Inside, the manor house is modest but refined, with a house chapel in the central axis of the upper floor decorated with pilasters and a stucco ceiling, and a large external staircase on the courtyard side, where the pavement dates 1884 is visible, indicating 19th‑century renovations. In the 19th century the von Montigny family left the Eifel, and the estate passed to the Kaut family, whose descendants still own it; in the 1970s the château was used as a filming location for the movie Winterspelt.
