Sedan
Ardennes Department, France
Sedan, in the Ardennes Department of France, originated in the 10th century and grew around a castle established in the 13th century.
It became an independent principality under the de la Marck family in the 15th and 16th centuries, known for its fortress and significance as a refuge for French Protestants during the religious wars.
The town thrived as a cloth-manufacturing center in the 16th and 17th centuries and maintained importance through the reign of Louis XIV. Sedan was the site of major military conflicts, most notably the Battle of Sedan in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, where France suffered a decisive defeat leading to the fall of Emperor Napoleon III and significant political changes in France.
The town also experienced intense fighting in World War II, resulting in the destruction of many historic buildings. Today, Sedan retains much of its historical character, including its fortress, which is regarded as one of the largest in Europe, and commemorates the legacy of Marshal Turenne, a notable French military leader born there.
