Senafe
Southern Region, Eritrea
Senafe is a market town located on the edge of the Eritrean highlands in southern Eritrea. It is inhabited mainly by the Saho and Tigrinya people and is known for its rich cultural and religious history.
The area surrounding Senafe contains significant archaeological and historical sites including the ruins of Metera, an ancient trading center dating back to around the 7th century BC, the monolithic church of Enda-Tsadqan, and other remnants of Pre-Axumite and Axumite civilizations. The region is geographically notable for its volcanic ignimbrite soil and its position on the edge of a large caldera.
Despite experiencing damage during the Eritrean-Ethiopian conflict, efforts now focus on developing tourism, agriculture, and infrastructure to leverage its historical wealth and natural resources. Agriculture is supported by numerous water dams, and beekeeping is an important local industry. The town maintains schools and health facilities and is gradually expanding its services as peace allows for development and growth.
