Setif
Setif Province, Algeria
Sétif is the capital and largest city of Sétif Province in northeastern Algeria, widely regarded as the country’s “trade capital” and one of its most important urban centers, located 270 km east of Algiers and 131 km west of Constantine on the Hautes Plaines high plateau at an elevation of about 1,100 meters (3,609 feet).
Founded as the Roman veterans’ colony Sitifis under Emperor Nerva in 97 CE, it later served as the capital of the Roman province of Mauretania Sitifensis and retains visible Roman and Byzantine remains, including city walls, a U-shaped circus, temples, a mausoleum and the 3rd–4th century Scipio fortress, alongside an archaeological museum rich in artifacts from Numidian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
The modern city was laid out in a wide, tree-lined grid by the French army in 1838 and 1848, featuring landmarks like the ornate Ain El Fouara fountain inaugurated in 1899 and a historic French colonial theater, giving parts of Sétif a distinctly Gallic feel. Sétif is a major agricultural and processing hub for the surrounding cereal-growing region, producing semolina, couscous and noodles from local wheat, and hosts the University of Sétif (founded 1978), fueling its role as an educational and economic center for eastern Algeria.
