Shell Beach
Shark Bay Region, Australia
Shell Beach in the Shark Bay World Heritage region of Western Australia is a unique natural wonder located 45 kilometers southeast of Denham, where the shoreline consists entirely of trillions of tiny white cockle shells from the Fragum cockle species, piled up to 7-10 meters deep over a 60-120 kilometer stretch along L'Haridon Bight.
The hypersaline waters, twice as salty as the ocean due to high evaporation and limited inflow, deter predators allowing these cockles to thrive unchecked, creating the beach's distinctive shell carpet that's one of only two such formations worldwide.
Visitors enjoy safe swimming and floating in the buoyant shallows, beachcombing for perfect shells, short interpretive walks from the parking area, and vivid turquoise views, with no facilities beyond a pit toilet and no camping permitted, making it an easy day trip accessible by any vehicle.
