Sisak Fortress
Sisak, Croatia
Sisak Fortress, also called Stari Grad Sisak, is a well-preserved Renaissance fortress located at the confluence of the Kupa and Sava rivers in Sisak, Croatia. Built between 1544 and 1550 to defend against Ottoman invasions, it features a distinctive triangular design with thick brick walls reinforced by round towers capped with conical roofs.
The fortress played a key role in the Battle of Sisak in 1593, where a coalition of Croatian, Slovenian, and Austrian forces decisively defeated the Ottoman army, marking a turning point in halting Ottoman expansion into Central Europe. Over the centuries, it experienced damages and repairs, including partial destruction during World War II.
Today, the fortress houses the Sisak Town Museum, showcasing archaeological, ethnological, and cultural history collections, and remains a symbol of Croatian resilience and heritage.
