Skrad Castle
Croatia, Croatia
Skrad Castle is a medieval ruined fortress situated on a hill overlooking the Korana River in Karlovac County, Croatia. It was once one of the larger castles in the region, built with limestone and roughly triangular in shape, featuring six towers, a church, and several buildings.
The castle was initially owned by the noble House of Frankopan but changed hands multiple times through complex historical transactions involving Hungarian and Croatian nobility during the 15th and 16th centuries. It experienced repeated conflicts and damage during Turkish invasions, including significant raids in the late 15th and 16th centuries, leading to severe depopulation and destruction.
After falling to the Turks in 1585, the original castle was burned, and a new wooden fort named Novi Skrad was built nearby. The area was later resettled mainly by Serbs from Bosnia in the late 17th century, while remnants of the castle are now mostly hidden by forest, with only some walls visible today.
