Solis Theatre
Montevideo, Uruguay
Solis Theatre in Montevideo, Uruguay, opened in 1856 and is the country's most prestigious and historic theater.
Designed by Italian architect Carlo Zucchi, its neoclassical façade with Corinthian columns reflects grand European influences. Located in Montevideo’s Old Town near Plaza Independencia, the theater was named after Juan Díaz de Solís, the first European explorer to arrive in the region.
The theater was built to provide a cultural hub for social gatherings and artistic performances, quickly becoming central to Uruguay's cultural life. It hosted the first Uruguayan national opera, "La Parisina," in 1878. After undergoing extensive renovations completed in 2004, restoring its architectural grandeur and enhancing acoustics, it continues to serve as a vibrant venue for opera, ballet, concerts, and theater, embodying Uruguay’s rich artistic heritage.
