Southport Spit
Australia, Australia
Southport Spit, commonly known locally as The Spit, is a permanent sand spit and neighbourhood at the northern end of Main Beach on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
It stretches about 5 km from Main Beach to the Gold Coast Seaway, forming a narrow isthmus that separates the calm Broadwater from the Pacific Ocean. The Spit is home to the Sea World theme park, several luxury resorts and hotels, a marina precinct, and parklands that run along the ocean side, making it a mix of tourism hub and coastal parkland.
It began forming in the late 19th century through natural sand movements and has since developed into a high‑profile destination with surfing, walking paths such as the Federation Walk, and a long‑term master plan to enhance both public open space and tourism development along the spit.
