Spinalonga Fortress
Greece, Greece
Spinalonga Fortress is a historic fortified island located off the coast of Crete, near Elounda.
The island was heavily fortified by the Venetians in the late 16th century to protect important shipping routes and the nearby harbor, creating one of the Mediterranean’s most impressive sea fortresses. Over the centuries, Spinalonga passed from Venetian to Ottoman control and developed into a thriving settlement.
Its most famous chapter began in the early 20th century, when it became a leper colony, housing people with leprosy from across Greece until 1957. Despite the hardships, residents built a functioning community with homes, shops, churches, and social life. Today, Spinalonga is one of Crete’s most visited historical sites.
