Spirited Garden

Jeju City, South Korea, South Korea

Spirited Garden is a 10-acre (about 43,000 square meter) traditional Asian-style bonsai garden on Jeju Island, South Korea, located at 675 Nokchabunjae-ro in Hangyeong-myeon near Jeju City, created as the passion project of farmer Seong Beom-yeong (also spelled Sung Beom-Young) who began transforming rocky wasteland considered too poor for crops into this landscape in 1968–1969 at age 29. The garden showcases hundreds of Korean bunjae (bonsai) trees—currently about 400 planted trees on display—along with Korea's native garden trees, unique rock formations, ornamental stones, clear ponds filled with large carp and koi, spacious lawns, small volcanic hills called oreum, stone walls and gates crafted from Jeju's volcanic basalt, bridges, and the largest artificial waterfall in Jeju. Its design follows traditional Korean garden principles of tranquility, simplicity, and harmony, with the theme of oreum (volcanic cone) and water, and it comprises seven to eight themed sub-gardens that create a serene, harmonious atmosphere.
