St. Peter’s Basilica
Vatican City, Holy See
St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City stands as a monumental symbol of the Catholic Church and one of the world’s largest and most revered churches.
Its construction began in 1506 under Pope Julius II to replace the original 4th-century Constantinian basilica built over the believed burial site of Saint Peter, one of Jesus’ apostles. Designed initially by Donato Bramante with a Greek cross plan, the basilica’s architecture evolved through contributions from famed artists including Raphael, Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, and most notably Michelangelo, who simplified the plan and designed its iconic dome.
The dome, completed in 1590 by Giacomo della Porta, rises about 138 meters (453 feet) and remains one of the tallest domes in the world. The church was extended to a Latin cross layout by Carlo Maderno and features Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s grand Baroque interior elements, such as the baldachin over the papal altar.
Consecrated in 1626 by Pope Urban VIII, the basilica houses numerous art masterpieces and relics, serving as a pilgrimage site and venue for significant liturgical events. Its massive nave, intricate decoration, and spiritual significance continue to inspire millions worldwide.
