Stari Grad Modruš
Modruš, Croatia
Stari Grad Modruš, a ruined medieval castle located above the village of Modruš in central Croatia’s Lika region, dates back to at least the 9th century and was a key strategic fortress controlling the important road connecting the Adriatic coast and the Pannonian Basin.
It served as the administrative seat of Modruš County and was owned by the noble Frankopan family from the late 12th century until the mid-16th century. The castle’s impressive stone walls, bastions, and towers were built using skilled techniques influenced possibly by Venetian builders. Modruš flourished in the 14th and 15th centuries and became the seat of a bishopric in 1460.
However, with increasing Ottoman threats and population decline, the castle lost its significance, fell into military hands, and was ultimately abandoned in 1791, leaving behind historic ruins that reflect its medieval importance and tumultuous history.
