Table Mountain Aerial Cableway
Constantia, Cape Town, South Africa, South Africa
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway (often called the “Cable Car”) is Cape Town’s most popular tourist attraction, offering a smooth five-minute ride from the lower station on Tafelberg Road in Constantia to the flat summit plateau of Table Mountain at 1,067 meters (3,501 feet) elevation. Opened on October 4, 1929, and completed at a cost of £60,000, the cableway has carried approximately one million visitors annually and uses modern, rotating cable cars that turn 360 degrees during the ascent, ensuring every passenger enjoys panoramic views of Cape Town, Table Bay, Robben Island, the Atlantic Seaboard, and beyond. At the top station, visitors can enjoy free guided 30-minute walking tours, a self-service buffet café (TEN67 Eatery), the VIEWS and KLOUD bars, a Wi-Fi lounge, souvenir shops, and spotting wildlife like rock hyrax, lizards, porcupines, and diverse fynbos vegetation in their native habitat 3,500 feet above the city. The Cableway operates seven days a week with departures every 10–15 minutes, though it may close during bad weather, and offers special perks such as free return rides for South African citizens during their birthday month and Fast Track upgrades to skip queues.
