The Camelot Castle
Hillcrest, South Africa, South Africa
The Camelot Castle, commonly known as “The Castle,” is a Tudor-style stone building and event venue located on the Camelot Golf Estate in Hillcrest, near Durban, in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province.
It was originally built in the 1970s as part of the Greensleeves estate complex developed by Richard Gaylord in the 1980s, and it was formerly known as Greensleeves Castle before being renamed and revitalized as The Camelot Castle when the Murdey family took ownership in March 2023 after it had been neglected and overgrown with ivy.
The castle functions as a romantic, fairytale-style venue for weddings, corporate events, and themed gatherings, featuring a grand entrance hall, a chapel with stained-glass windows that can accommodate up to about 120 guests for ceremonies, a flexible main reception hall, a Mediterranean-inspired courtyard with a fountain for outdoor dining and dancing, and a turret bridal suite that serves as a princess-style preparation room for the bride and her bridesmaids.
Situated within the broader Camelot Estate, which is designed as an English country paradise with Tudor-style houses, lakes, manicured gardens, and a nine-hole golf course, the castle is surrounded by a conservancy area that includes over 2,000 trees and supports a wide variety of birds, small mammals, reptiles, and other wildlife, giving visitors a combination of historic architecture and natural, garden-like surroundings in a suburban setting near Durban.
