The Koppie Nature Reserve is a small but scenic nature reserve located just outside the town of Prieska on the banks of the Orange River in the Northern Cape’s Upper Karoo region, offering visitors a compact Karoo landscape centered around a prominent rocky hill (koppie) that rises from the surrounding plains.

The reserve is set along the N10 route between Upington and Douglas, making it a convenient stop for travelers heading to Namibia or the Kgalagadi, and it combines natural beauty with a relatively quiet, rural atmosphere typical of the Karoo. Inside the reserve, visitors can explore walking trails that lead up to the kopie, where the terrain and vegetation provide a mix of rocky outcrops, Karoo scrub, and open veld, and from the top there are excellent views over the surrounding landscape and the Orange River valley.

Wildlife in the reserve includes small antelope such as springbok, red hartebeest, and other Karoo species, as well as smaller mammals like hares and mongoose, while the area is also a bird‑watching spot where raptors such as the black‑shouldered kite and secretary bird can be seen soaring above, and smaller birds such as weavers and larks are common around the koppie and vegetation.

Although modest in size, The Koppie Nature Reserve is one of Prieska’s main recreational highlights, often mentioned together with the town’s golf club and coffee shops, and it provides a peaceful setting for short hikes, nature observation, and an introduction to the Upper Karoo’s distinctive flora, geology, and rural character.
