Verified Tillegem Castle

Belgium, Belgium

Tillegem Castle, locally known as Kasteel van Tillegem, is a historic moated castle just south of Bruges in the Sint‑Michiels district of West Flanders, Belgium, with origins possibly as early as the 9th century but a core structure built in the 12th or 13th century by Lord Jan van Voormezele as a square water‑defended castle with corner towers.

Over the centuries the castle was owned by wealthy Bruges families and rebuilt several times, gradually losing its purely defensive character and becoming a more comfortable country residence, while medieval elements such as 14th‑century cellars were preserved within the structure. In 1879 it was purchased by Baron Eugène Charles de Peñaranda de Franchimont, who instructed architect Jean‑Baptiste de Béthune to restore and transform it into a striking Flemish Gothic Revival building with symmetrical façades, turrets, crenellations and a romantic moated setting that defines its present appearance.

The castle remained a private home until 1980, when the Province of West Flanders acquired the estate, carried out extensive restoration work and adapted the building for administrative use; today it houses various provincial government offices and is not normally open for interior visits, though the large wooded park covering about 131 hectares, part of the protected Tillegembos, is freely accessible to the public for walking and cycling.
