Tonachau, also known as Tonnachau or Tonaachaw, is a prominent limestone mountain on Weno Island in Chuuk State, Micronesia. It rises to about 1,100 feet (340 meters) and is a well-known landmark near Chuuk International Airport. The mountain holds significant cultural and historical importance for the Chuukese people, with archaeological sites including prehistoric middens and fortifications dating back to around 4,000 BCE.
According to local tradition, a hero named Soukachou built a fort on Tonachau when he arrived from Kosrae and established rule over the Chuuk Lagoon. The site also contains extensive Japanese military fortifications from World War II. Hiking Tonachau offers panoramic views of Weno Island and Chuuk Lagoon, making it a popular activity for visitors interested in natural beauty, history, and culture.
The mountain was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1976, reflecting its significance.
