Toplou Monastery is a historic Greek Orthodox monastery located in the remote northeastern part of Crete, near Sitia.

Founded in the 14th century, it is known for its fortress-like architecture, with thick stone walls built to protect it from pirates, invaders, and other threats that frequently affected the region. The monastery played an important role in Crete’s religious, cultural, and political history. It survived earthquakes, Ottoman rule, and wartime destruction, while also supporting local resistance movements during both the Ottoman period and World War II.

Toplou is renowned for its collections of Byzantine icons, religious artworks, and historic manuscripts. Its name comes from the Turkish word “top,” meaning “cannon,” referring to the defensive cannon once mounted at the monastery. Today, the monastery remains active and is one of Crete’s most significant religious and cultural landmarks.
