Tropical Botanical Garden
Lisbon, Portugal, Portugal
The Lisbon Tropical Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico Tropical), also known as the Colonial Garden, is a National Monument and exotic botanical garden located in Belém, Lisbon, between the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Palace (the official residence of the Portuguese president).
Originally created on January 25, 1906, by Royal Decree under King Carlos I as the Tropical Agriculture Museum Garden for education and scientific knowledge, it was first called Jardim Colonial (Colonial Garden) and transferred to its current Belém location in 1912. The garden covers 7 hectares total, including a 5-hectare botanical park open to the public, featuring about 600 species of tropical, subtropical, and temperate plants from several continents, particularly from Portugal's former colonies, alongside freshwater turtles, herons, and peach-fronted parakeets.
The grounds include 18th-century marble sculptures by Italian artists Giuseppe Mazzuoli and Bernardino Ludovici, the 1600s Calheta Palace, greenhouses, an herbarium, carpological collections (fruit specimens), wood collections, and zoological collections, serving as an open-air laboratory for maintaining living plant collections from tropical and subtropical areas.
