Trsat Castle in Rijeka, Croatia, sits on a hill 138 meters above sea level and has roots dating back to prehistoric times as a lookout for the Illyrian tribe Liburni, followed by a Roman fortification guarding a key route.

The present castle was built in the 13th century by the powerful Frankopan family and served as a strategic defensive fortress controlling access to the sea and nearby lands. Over the centuries, it was owned by the Habsburgs and local captains, endured battles including those against Venetian and Ottoman forces, and eventually fell into disrepair after the 17th century.

In the 19th century, it was restored in a Romantic style by Austrian Count Laval Nugent, who added a mausoleum to the site. Today, Trsat Castle is a cultural landmark with restored towers, ruins of its defensive walls, a museum, and hosts various cultural events, offering visitors panoramic views of Rijeka, the Adriatic Sea, and surrounding landscapes.
