Tvrđava Lovrjenac / Lovrjenac Fortress
Dubrovnik, Croatia, Croatia
Tvrđava Lovrjenac, or Lovrjenac Fortress, also known as St. Lawrence Fortress and "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar," stands on a 37-meter-high rocky cliff just outside Dubrovnik's western city walls in Croatia, guarding the Pile Gate and sea approaches since its first records in 1301.
Built rapidly in the 11th century to thwart Venetian control—with walls up to 12 meters thick facing the sea but deliberately thin toward the city for potential demolition—it features three terraced levels, a central atrium, cannon platforms including the massive "Lizard," and an inscribed gate declaring "Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro" (Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world).
