Verified Tvrđava Lovrjenac / Lovrjenac Fortress

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Lovrjenac Fortress, also known as St. Lawrence's Fortress, is a historic stronghold perched on a 37-meter-high cliff just outside Dubrovnik's city walls.

Built in the early 11th century, its rapid construction was a strategic move by the people of Dubrovnik to thwart Venetian plans to dominate the city by erecting a fortification in the same location. The fortress played a crucial role in protecting Dubrovnik from sea-based attacks and guarding the western entrance to the city.

It features thick walls reaching up to 12 meters on the seaward side, while the side facing the city is intentionally thin as a safeguard against internal rebellion. Lovrjenac has witnessed several reconstructions, particularly after damage from the 1667 earthquake, and today it serves not only as a historic symbol of Dubrovnik’s resilience and freedom but also as an open-air stage for performances, notably for Shakespeare’s Hamlet during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

Above its entrance, an inscription declares, "Freedom is not to be sold for all the gold in the world," underscoring its significance as a symbol of the city’s independence.
