Tvrđava Sinj
Sinj, Croatia
Tvrđava Sinj, also known as Sinj Fortress, is a historic 14th-century fortress located on a hill overlooking the town of Sinj in Dalmatia, Croatia. Originally built as a small fortification, it expanded over the centuries and played a crucial role in defending the region, particularly against Ottoman invasions.
The fortress is famous for the Battle of Sinj in 1715, where locals and Venetian forces repelled a large Ottoman army, an event celebrated annually in Sinj with the Alka Tournament, a traditional knights' competition. The fortress features strong stone walls up to 10 meters high and several watchtowers offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Inside the fortress stands the Church of St. Michael, a medieval religious site that remains partly in ruins. Though partly damaged, Sinj Fortress remains a significant cultural and historical landmark symbolizing the town's resilience and heritage.
