Unguja
Tanzania, Tanzania
Unguja, often called Zanzibar Island, is the largest and most populated island in the Zanzibar archipelago off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean.
It is a hilly island stretching about 85 kilometers north–south and around 30 kilometers at its widest, linked to the mainland across the Zanzibar Channel. The island belongs to the semi‑autonomous Zanzibar region of Tanzania and is best known for Stone Town’s historic Arab–Swahili architecture, its long stretches of white‑sand beaches, and a rich cultural mix shaped by African, Arab, Indian, and European influences.
Tourism is a major part of Unguja’s economy, but the island also relies on spice farming, especially cloves, plus fishing and seaweed farming along its east coast.
