Verified Universiteitsbibliotheek en bibliotheektoren

Leuven, Belgium, Belgium

The Universiteitsbibliotheek en bibliotheektoren (University Library and Library Tower) is the central library of KU Leuven, located on Monseigneur Ladeuzeplein in the heart of Leuven, Belgium.

The imposing Flemish Renaissance–style building dates from the 1920s, designed by American architect Whitney Warren, and replaced an earlier library that was famously burned by German troops in 1914 before being rebuilt with financial support from more than 400 American universities. The complex functions both as a working university library and as a war memorial, with its octagonal brick tower symbolizing the city’s reconstruction and resilience after the World Wars.

The tower, about 80 meters tall, contains a beiaard (carillon) and can be climbed by visitors, who pass small photo exhibits on each floor that trace the library’s turbulent history and then reach an open‑air balcony with sweeping views over Leuven’s rooftops and countryside. Since 1987, the library and its interior have been recognized as a protected monument, making it one of the city’s most prominent cultural and architectural landmarks.
