Upper Barrakka Gardens

Valletta, Malta

The Upper Barrakka Gardens are one of the most popular attractions in Valletta, offering spectacular panoramic views of the Grand Harbour, the Three Cities, and Malta’s historic waterfront.

Located on the upper level of the Saints Peter and Paul Bastion, the gardens occupy the highest point of the city walls and are considered one of the best viewpoints in the country. Originally created in 1661 as a private recreation area for the Italian knights of the Order of Saint John, the gardens were opened to the public after the end of the French occupation in 1800.

Today, visitors can enjoy landscaped walkways, elegant arches, monuments, and a peaceful atmosphere in the heart of the capital. The gardens are also famous for overlooking the historic Saluting Battery, where ceremonial cannon firings are held daily. Combining history, architecture, and breathtaking harbor views, the Upper Barrakka Gardens are among the most iconic and photographed locations in Malta.
