Upper Fort St. Angelo

Birgu (Vittoriosa), Malta

---

Upper Fort St. Angelo is the highest and most historic section of Fort St. Angelo, a major fortress located at the tip of the peninsula in Birgu (Vittoriosa), Malta.

Originally a medieval castle, it was transformed by the Order of Saint John into a powerful stronghold that guarded the entrance to the Grand Harbour. The fort is best known for its crucial role during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, when it served as the headquarters of the Knights and successfully resisted Ottoman attacks.

Over the centuries, it was further expanded and later used by the British military, remaining an important defensive site until the late 20th century. Today, visitors can explore its restored ramparts, historic buildings, chapels, and exhibition spaces while enjoying spectacular views over Grand Harbour, Valletta, and the surrounding Three Cities. It is widely regarded as one of Malta’s most significant historical landmarks and symbols of resilience.
