Usson is a picturesque hilltop village in central France’s Puy-de-Dôme department, perched on a volcanic peak within the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park.

With fewer than 300 residents, it is officially recognized as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France). The village is famous for its connection to Queen Margot (Marguerite de Valois), who spent nearly twenty years in exile at the fortress of Usson during the late 16th century. Although the castle was later destroyed on the orders of Cardinal Richelieu, its history remains a defining part of the village’s identity.

Usson is also known for its volcanic heritage, including striking basalt columns formed by ancient lava flows. From the summit, visitors can enjoy impressive panoramic views of the Chaîne des Puys, the Sancy Massif, and the surrounding countryside.
