Venetian Castle of Assos
Erisos, Greece, Greece
The Venetian Castle of Assos is a large 16th-century fortress located on a hilltop peninsula above the picturesque village of Assos on the island of Kefalonia.
Built by the Venetians between 1593 and 1596, it was designed to protect the island from pirate attacks and Ottoman raids and became an important defensive and administrative center for northern Kefalonia. Surrounded by extensive walls and overlooking the Ionian Sea, the castle was once one of the strongest fortifications in the region.
Although its military importance declined over time, it remained inhabited for centuries and later served various purposes, including housing refugees and a prison. Today, the castle stands as one of Kefalonia’s most impressive historical landmarks. Visitors can explore its ruins, gateways, and old walls while enjoying spectacular panoramic views of Assos village, the coastline, and the surrounding sea.
