The Venetian Castle of Nafpaktos is one of Greece’s best-preserved medieval fortresses, overlooking the town of Nafpaktos and the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth.

Built on a strategically important hill and incorporating earlier ancient and Byzantine defenses, the castle grew over many centuries as different rulers strengthened its walls and fortifications. The fortress was especially enhanced during Venetian rule, when it became a key defensive stronghold controlling maritime routes between western and central Greece.

Its layered walls descend from the hilltop citadel toward the harbor, creating an impressive defensive system unique in Greece. Because of its strategic location, Nafpaktos changed hands numerous times among Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman powers. The town, known to the Venetians as Lepanto, played an important role in regional military and naval history for centuries.

Today, the castle is a major historical attraction, offering visitors well-preserved fortifications, scenic walking routes, and spectacular views over the town, harbor, and Gulf of Corinth. It stands as a powerful reminder of Nafpaktos’s long and important history.
