Verified Venetian Castle of Naxos

Naxos, Greece, Greece

The Venetian Castle of Naxos, also known as the Kastro, is a medieval fortified district that crowns the old town of Naxos (Chora) in the Cyclades.

It was built in 1207 by the Venetian nobleman Marco Sanudo after he conquered the island and established the Duchy of the Archipelago, making Naxos the administrative center of Venetian rule in the Aegean. Constructed on the site of an ancient acropolis, the castle was designed as a fortified settlement for the Venetian nobility.

Its pentagonal layout, sturdy walls, gates, towers, and narrow streets reflect medieval defensive architecture, while many noble residences, churches, and historic buildings still survive within its walls. Unlike many castles that became ruins, the Kastro remained continuously inhabited through the Venetian, Ottoman, and modern Greek periods.

It developed into a unique neighborhood where medieval architecture blends with everyday life, and descendants of old Venetian families still maintain ties to the area. Today, the Venetian Castle of Naxos is one of the island’s most important cultural landmarks. Visitors can wander its atmospheric alleys, admire historic churches and mansions, and enjoy panoramic views of the town and the Aegean Sea while experiencing a living piece of Naxos’s history.
