The Venetian Fort Kales is a historic fortress that stands at the entrance to the old harbor of Ierapetra on the southern coast of Crete.

Built during the Venetian period in the 13th century, it was designed to protect the town and its harbor from pirate attacks and invading forces. Some traditions also attribute its original construction to the Genoese adventurer Enrico Pescatore before it came under Venetian control. Over the centuries, the fortress suffered damage from earthquakes and conflicts, including a major earthquake in 1508.

It was later strengthened by the Venetians and repaired by the Ottomans after they captured Ierapetra in 1647. The name “Kales” comes from a Turkish word meaning “castle” or “tower.” The fort has a compact rectangular design with corner towers, battlements, and a central courtyard. Despite its relatively small size, it played an important role in guarding the harbor and controlling access to the town.

Today, Kales is one of Ierapetra’s most recognizable landmarks and serves as an archaeological site. Visitors can explore its historic walls, learn about the town’s Venetian and Ottoman past, and enjoy views of the harbor and the Libyan Sea.
