Venetian Fortress of Koules
Heraklion, Greece, Greece
The Venetian Fortress of Koules, also known as Rocca a Mare, stands at the entrance of the old harbor of Heraklion and is one of Crete’s most famous landmarks.
Built by the Republic of Venice between 1523 and 1540, it was designed to protect the city’s important port and defend against naval attacks. Constructed on the site of earlier fortifications, the fortress features massive stone walls, thick defenses, and spaces that were used for storing supplies, ammunition, and housing soldiers.
During the long Siege of Candia, it played a key role in the city’s defense before being taken over by the Ottomans in 1669. The fortress remained in use for centuries and has been carefully restored. Visitors can explore its interior halls, admire the carved Lion of Saint Mark, the symbol of Venice, and enjoy impressive views of the harbor and the sea from its upper level.
Today, Koules is a symbol of Heraklion’s maritime history and one of the city’s most popular attractions, regularly hosting exhibitions and cultural events while showcasing the island’s Venetian heritage.
