Venetian Walls of Heraklion
Heraklion, Greece, Greece
The Venetian Walls of Heraklion are a vast system of fortifications that surround the old city of Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete.
Built by the Republic of Venice between the 15th and 16th centuries, they were designed to protect the city from Ottoman attacks and were considered among the most advanced defensive structures in the Mediterranean at the time. The walls include massive bastions, gates, moats, and defensive works that stretched around the city.
Their strength was famously demonstrated during the Siege of Candia, when the city resisted Ottoman forces for 21 years before finally falling in 1669. Today, the fortifications remain largely intact and are regarded as some of the best-preserved Venetian defenses in Europe.
Visitors can walk along sections of the walls, enjoy panoramic views of Heraklion, and explore historic landmarks such as the Martinengo Bastion, where celebrated Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis is buried. The Venetian Walls are one of Heraklion’s most important historical attractions, offering a striking reminder of the city’s strategic importance and centuries of cultural heritage.
