Victoria State Rose Garden
Werribee South, Australia, Australia
Victoria State Rose Garden is an internationally acclaimed rose garden located at Gate 2, K Road in Werribee South, 35 kilometers west of Melbourne's city centre, occupying about 2.5 hectares (6 acres) within the prestigious grounds of Werribee Park.
With over 5,000 roses covering approximately 5 hectares, the garden features more than 5,000 roses in bloom from October to May, with the best months being November through March when spring flowerers and the main Tudor Rose display are at their most magnificent. The garden was awarded the International Garden of Excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies in 2003, making it the first rose garden outside Europe to receive this prestigious award and the only one at that time cared for entirely by volunteers.
The garden's design presents a stylised rose shape, with pathways acting as a rose stem leading from the five-petalled Tudor Rose petals containing HT and Floribunda roses (the largest display area at the northern end) to a Federation Leaf dedicated to Australian roses and a David Austin Bud showcasing 46 rose cultivars.
The garden is open daily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm (April-September) or 6:00 pm (October-March), admission is free, and it offers big shelters with tables about 200 meters from the entrance, seats inside the gardens, water taps, shady spots around the edge, and a gazebo to escape spring showers or summer heat, with two earth mounds visitors can climb for an overall perspective.
