Vila Real de Santo António
Portugal, Portugal
Vila Real de Santo António is a small, planned town on Portugal’s far southeast coast, in the Algarve region, right on the banks of the Guadiana River across from the Spanish town of Ayamonte.
It was founded in 1774 on the orders of the Marquês de Pombal, using the same orderly grid layout and simple, uniform architecture that also shaped Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake, so its streets are straight and its 18th‑century Pombaline buildings give it a clean, classical feel.
The town faces the Atlantic with a long promenade and beach, while the riverfront side has a marina, ferry terminal and pleasant café‑lined waterfront perfect for strolling and watching Spain just a short ride away.
The historic centre centres on Praça Marquês de Pombal, a wide, striking black‑and‑white cobbled square with an obelisk, church and town hall, surrounded by orange trees and terraces, making it a quiet but lively hub for food, culture and local events rather than a typical crowded beach resort.
