Vissec
France, France
Vissec is a tiny rural commune in the Gard department of southern France, with fewer than 100 residents.
It is located in the Occitanie region, nestled within the scenic Gorges de la Vis and near the famous Cirque de Navacelles, one of France’s most remarkable natural landscapes. The village is known for its unusual geography. Much of the Vis River disappears underground upstream and re-emerges near Vissec, creating a distinctive dry valley landscape that has shaped local life for centuries.
Vissec is part of the UNESCO-listed Causses and Cévennes cultural landscape and lies within the Grand Site de France of the Cirque de Navacelles. Traditional sheep and goat farming remain important, helping preserve the area's biodiversity and historic pastoral character. Visitors come for the peaceful atmosphere, historic village streets, remains of its former fortified settlement, nearby Château de Vissec, and the outstanding natural scenery surrounding the commune.
