Vitré is a historic medieval town in the Brittany region of France, dominated by the impressive Château de Vitré, a fortified castle originally built in the 11th century on a rocky promontory overlooking the Vilaine River.

The castle was reconstructed in the 13th century into a rare triangular shape to adapt to its terrain and was further expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries, adding powerful defensive features like double drawbridges and imposing towers. The castle now houses the town hall and a museum with exhibits that showcase the region's history, art, and architecture.

Vitré’s old town features picturesque streets lined with charming half-timbered houses, reflecting its rich medieval and Renaissance heritage which was enhanced by the prosperous merchant class involved in canvas manufacturing in the 16th and 17th centuries.
