Vonitsa Castle is a large hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Vonitsa and the Ambracian Gulf in western Greece.

Its strategic location allowed it to control maritime routes and protect the town’s natural harbor, making it an important military and trading center for centuries. The castle originated during the Byzantine period and was later expanded and modified by the Venetians and Ottomans.

Throughout its history, it changed hands many times between Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, and local rulers, reflecting the region’s importance in the struggle for control of western Greece. Today, Vonitsa Castle is one of the best-preserved fortresses in the area, featuring impressive walls, towers, and an inner citadel.
