Voortrekker Monument
Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa
The Voortrekker Monument is a massive granite memorial located on Monument Hill just south of Pretoria in Gauteng, South Africa, built to honor the Voortrekkers—Dutch Afrikaner pioneers who left the British-controlled Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854 in an epic migration known as the Great Trek. Designed by architect Gerard Moerdijk in an Art Deco style and opened on December 16, 1949, the 40-meter-tall (131-foot) structure is surrounded by 64 granite ox-wagons arranged in a circle, symbolizing the laager (defensive camp) of the trekkers, and features statues of key Boer leaders like Piet Retief and Andries Pretorius on its exterior. Inside, the Hall of Heroes houses the world’s largest historical frieze, consisting of 27 marble bas-relief panels depicting the Voortrekkers’ heroics and daily life, along with a cenotaph that is uniquely illuminated by a single shaft of sunlight at noon every December 16 through an opening in the roof. The site, declared a National Heritage Site in 2011 and surrounded by a National Nature Reserve with small game and an indigenous garden, serves as both a museum of Afrikaner history and a place to explore South Africa’s complex and compelling past.
