Vyborg Castle

Vyborg Castle is not located in Denmark, but rather in the town of Vyborg on the Karelian Isthmus, near the border between Finland and Russia.

It was built by the Swedes in the 1290s during the Third Swedish Crusade to Finland, on the site of an earlier Karelian fortress. The castle was a key stronghold of the medieval Kingdom of Sweden, guarding the Bay of Vyborg and controlling important trade routes inland connecting to lakes and rivers.

The fortress played a critical defensive role against Russian forces through many centuries and was expanded and renovated through the 16th century. It fell to the Russians in 1710, was included in the Grand Duchy of Finland, and today stands as a historical museum reflecting its strategic and military importance in the region’s history.
