Waterburcht Millen
Riemst, Belgium, Belgium
The Waterburcht Millen is a historic castle in the village of Millen, part of Riemst in the Belgian province of Limburg, located at Kattestraat 22 on the edge of the small settlement’s agricultural landscape.
The site originated as a medieval motte (raised earthwork) in the 11th–12th century, with a stone donjon (tower) built in the 12th–13th century, and later evolved into a square watercastle surrounded by moats in the 14th century, before finally being transformed in the first half of the 17th century into a Maasland Renaissance castle that forms the core of what survives today.
The present structure consists of two parallel buildings with an eastern wing that includes a round tower, all built in local marl (chalky limestone) and showing Gothic vaulting, massive stone walls, and decorative wrought‑iron anchor plates that mark the progression of different building phases and defensive techniques.
