Verified Zebreira

Zebreira, Portugal, Portugal

Zebreira is a historic village in Idanha-a-Nova municipality, Castelo Branco district, eastern Portugal near the Spanish border, once an independent council until annexed to Salvaterra do Extremo in 1834 and then Idanha-a-Nova in 1855.

Repopulated in the 12th century by the Knights Templar during the Reconquista, it features fertile lands for olives, fruits, and cereals, alongside landmarks like the 18th-century Mother Church with its Espírito Santo chapel altar, a 1686 pelourinho topped by lions, armillary sphere, flower, and cleaver-armed figures symbolizing lost municipal autonomy, plus hermitages.

A calvary, old town hall with clock tower, and the ruins of Castelo de Zebreira atop its holy hill. Now part of Zebreira e Segura parish with around 873 residents historically, it preserves frontier heritage amid rugged terrain.
